Welcome to the Death Weapon Meister Academy!
I'm a huge fan of very dark(ish) shows. Not sure what spawned it but that whole gray theme cloudy vibe is something I've grown to be quite fond of; I'm a fan of the gloom. I was expecting it to be similar to the original show but turned out to be it's complete opposite. It's very colorful, chipper and carefree... sorta. But after watching the series whole I get why the creators would go down this route. If falls in theme with the NOT class aspect.
NOT, an acronym for Normally Overcome Target. Indicating that your targets may pose to be a challenge from time to time but it's something with the proper training, can be conquered. So NOT is not meant to be so dark. It may have it's moments here and there but no where near the vicinity to that of the EAT class. EAT = Especially Advantaged Talent, the class in which Maka, Soul and the rest of her fellow meister & weapon classmates are in.
One thing that I really much enjoyed was the back story to Sid's death prior his zombie resurrection. Another thing that had such a delight insight was the also the back story to Kim and Jacqueline. Since we don't see much of them in the original show, it was quite nice to see how they played in the NOT show.
So from the looks of it, this part of the series takes place prior to the event of Asura. Most prequels don't take place that soon, most will usually leave a huge gap. The show in it's over all concept and aspect stayed very in themed to what the NOT class would bring into the picture. But to any hardcore Soul Eater fans reading this, no I have not read the manga so I don't know if it's true to the original writings.
The NOT seems to be more centrally focused towards daily life and everyday endeavors. So there is plenty of space to build a normal life. If anything it gives off a very 'happiness' type of choice. Now as to comparison to EAT which from the looks of it, EAT seems to be more of a 'calling' route. So that life is meant to be incredibly difficult and there will be a lot of 'fork road' choices; The kind that either make or break you. Which explains a lot to the original show. The girls love triangle I found to be quite cute, and yes I just did say that but in all honesty this does happen in real life.
Tsugumi Harudori being a very care free with an huge open heart but also tangled in a web of insecurities is in truth something many can relate to. So it's quite interesting to see her combat her daily life choices but also it's impressive to see her character develop so quickly. Many would write that off as bad story telling and as much as I would like to agree, I can not. Being a student of the DWMA to put it bluntly, you pretty much have to grow the fuck up real fast. And I can see why that would be. To be entrusted to safeguard the security of the population, shit you pretty much have to be on top of your game. The widow to be 'careless' is limited to freshman year. After that, you have to have your ducks in order. Though it did felt a bit rush, it was so done properly. Not to mention that last episode "Soul Resonance", I very much liked how it stayed in theme to Maka's 'brave' final episode. Points!
Meme Tatane is a total space cadet and forgets everything. I loved everything about this girl. There was a line in which she was being explained something and her reaction was priceless. I couldn't stop laughing because I am guilty of having moments like that. Miester to Tsugumi, her role is a more open and very loving. She has a very accepting vibe to her which was bonus cause we don't see a lot of that these days.
Anya Hepburn, little miss royal pain in the ass princes, yeah I can't deny I acutally did very much enjoyed her role. Also meister to Tsugumi, but her role is the total polar opposite to Meme. A very blunt and harsh girl. Firm, level headed and laser focused on whatever goal she sets her eyes on. If anything she is the reality check to Tsugumi. Although she is heavliy harsh on Tsugumi and always belittling her as being a 'commoner' and is ridiculously over jealous towards Meme. Let's be honest ladies... a lot of you can relate. Still as over zealous as she can be, her intentions are pure and on point to wanting the best out of Tsugumi. Getting her to accept her own self and being that guiding hand so she won't fall off the cliff. If anything we can learn a lot of her more reasonable traits to adopt into our own. Some people will push and work you to the bone but that is only to peal off the layers of bullshit that is leaching on you to awaken your true form that lies dormant. To that, I was impress for her role.
Shaula (antagonist), though striving to be stronger and surpass her older sisters Medusa and Arachne , she is no where near their field of manipulation and chaos. So her witch in comparison was nothing. Medusa flat out worked in plain sight at the DWMA where as Arachne hid away for 800 years waiting to resurface but that is what she gets for getting on Death's ultra mega shit list. Still, Shaula had some key points and had several parts in which reflected some very dark elements to the original show.
I really wish there was more of the Death the Kid, that guy's OCD is just on point. HUUUGE points to the back story towards how Liz and Patty came to be Death the Kid's weapon. I'm very glad there was very little on Black Star.... I can't stand the little cocky dick bag.
My only real beef with the show was the very obvious .... where in the FUCK was Lord Death?!!
I did watch the original with subs when it was launched last year. I rarely ever choose subs over dubs. Mostly due to that I want to watch what I hear and not read. Had I paid more attention in Japanese class I would not be having this problem. But any who, so there were very few things that I actually enjoyed the sub over the dub. Mostly it was the 'over reaction' shock that Tsugumi would have in her catch phrase "Gagantous!" Yeah that sounds way better for the sub. It's the high pitch and realization that the Japanese voice overs have, it's more convincing. Where as the English dub has a very plain reaction. I wasn't sold on it, but still, a B for effort. Well done to funimation to keeping the original cast from the original show. I was expecting to see some voice changes but glad to see it did not happen. Thumbs up!
Over all, I felt the show was very well written which is why I kept watching. Especially for the dub I am glad to see the translation was very on point.
